Bifocals and Multifocals

Bifocals and multifocals are types of eyeglasses designed to correct vision at multiple distances. Bifocals have two distinct optical powers, typically for near and distance vision, while multifocals, also known as progressive lenses, have a gradient of different optical powers to provide a more seamless transition between varying distances.

Bifocals traditionally feature a visible line separating the two lens powers, usually with the upper part for distance and the lower part for near tasks like reading. This design can sometimes cause a "jump" in vision when switching between the two fields. Multifocals, on the other hand, offer a gradual transition from distance to intermediate to near vision, eliminating the visible line and providing a more natural visual experience. They work well for those who need correction at multiple ranges but find bifocals limiting or visually jarring. Multifocals can be particularly beneficial for people experiencing presbyopia, a common age-related condition that reduces the eye's ability to focus on close objects. However, some individuals may need time to adapt to the progressive design and may experience initial discomfort or visual distortions.
